A Client Just Like You
I was having a deep conversation with my husband over dinner the other night and we got to thinking about ideal clients. It was a chat that sort of a piggy-backed off of my post from a few weeks ago, and it led to a monumental point.
We want clients just like us.
You know, a client who could be our best friend in real life. Someone who shares the same values and ideals. Someone who laughs at the same jokes as you. And, someone who shares a similar style.
Why? Because, when you think about it, your business should be a 100% true reflection of who you are. 100% authentic. And, when that happens, clients, who are just like you, are drawn to the work you’re doing. They are drawn to your mission.
So, the moral of the story is to not pick a client who is nothing like you. That is, unless you are trying to change who you are. If you’re not a flashy person, who has any desire to plan a platinum wedding, then don’t try to the planner who plans platinum weddings. If you’re a tattoo-loving, neon color fanatic – find clients who like (or are okay with tattoos), and sport color from head to toe.
The more and more you grow your business, the more and more you should realize that you have to be authentic – to who you are and who your ideal client is.

Very good advice – applies to many aspects of life, actually!
oh this is so true!
Awesome post Brit! We were just talking about this today-completely agree with you that the right clients are such an important part of your business! Definitely makes for happier clients and a happier you
I agree! Plus, working with clients you like/get along/are similar to makes for a much better working relationship than someone you can’t relate to.
Cheers!
That’s a really great reminder, and so true. Not only will it help your clients feel more comfortable with you, it will also help you figure out where to market and how to market what you do.
Totally agree! I want clients who play in the mountains, do yoga, have doggies and love Converse like me!
Totally, totally on p0int, Brit! “…your business should be a 100% true reflection of who you are. 100% authentic.” Authenticity is key to attracting what you want in your life and in your business. Goaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal Brit….short and to the point! I’m so inspired by our friendship.XO
Awww, I really loved this post! We talk all the time about how clients aren’t a good fit but sometimes we don’t do anything about it. We continue with the event because it’s a challenge or because, quite frankly, we need the revenue that the event brings. Thinking of it in the terms that you’ve layed out here sheds a new lights on it.
